Compared to most shonen anime series out there, Jujutsu Kaisen has an astronomically high death toll. No matter how fan-beloved or how important they may seem to the story, no character is safe from author Gege Akutami's pen. The series goes to great lengths to illustrate how dangerous the lives of its jujutsu sorcerers and curse users are, showing them no mercy in situations that a simple hospital trip in other titles might have solved.
Unsurprisingly, a lot of emphasis is placed on death in Jujutsu Kaisen. There's an in-universe adage that goes, "No sorcerer dies without regret," and enough of them have died with unfulfilled goals to prove some truth to it. From the most obscure of side characters to some of the most powerful and influential in the JJK universe, the final moments of these characters often end up as some of their most significant moments.
Updated on August 2, 2024, by Ajay Aravind: Several popular anime have been criticized for killing off their characters before bringing them back, even on multiple occasions. Although the world of Jujutsu Kaisen does have some kind of an afterlife, none of the dead have been resurrected as yet. With such a permanent sense of finality forming the core of each character arc, we have updated this article with some more relevant information.
This article contains serious spoilers for the Jujutsu Kaisen manga.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Ending Explained
With plot twists and shocking reveals, some fans might need help unpacking the end of Jujutsu Kaisen's exciting second season.
1
Rika Orimoto was the childhood best friend of Yuta Okkotsu. Both orphans, the duo shared a special bond and sealed a promise to get married to each other within a ring. Unfortunately, Rika died in an automobile accident shortly after, causing her to manifest as a vengeful cursed spirit that is incredibly protective of Yuta.
It isn't until Yuta Okkotsu joins jujutsu society that he learns he is responsible for transforming Rika's soul into a curse. Once he discovers this, his goal changes to freeing Rika from this state — a goal that he finally accomplishes during the events of Jujutsu Kaisen 0. Once Rika's soul is freed, she leaves for the afterlife. However, her overwhelming cursed energy still remains with Yuta, explaining why he's so powerful.

Cursed Spirit Manipulation | Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie | Takahiro Sakurai | Lex Lang |
By the time of his death, Suguru Geto believed that all sorcerers were naturally superior to humans, so he decided to create a world free of curses by killing every human who couldn't use jujutsu. This plan culminates in Jujutsu Kaisen 0's fateful Night Parade of a Thousand Demons, during which Geto is soundly defeated by Yuta Okkotsu and his cursed spirit, Rika.
The maximum amount of cursed energy Yuta could summon by using Rika far exceeded what Geto could wring from his remaining cursed spirit. As a result, the villain is brought to the brink of death. Geto manages to avoid dying and tries to escape the scene. However, in a fitting turn of events, the final blow is struck by none other than Satoru Gojo, his oldest friend. Geto's corpse would later be used by Kenjaku.

While fans only know Wasuke for less than one episode, the story depicts him as a very headstrong, no-nonsense man who deeply loves his grandson.
Unlike many Jujutsu Kaisen characters, Wasuke Itadori dies peacefully in a hospital bed with little fanfare. While well-meaning, his final words to Yuji may have cursed his grandson with a tremendous burden, as he asks Yuji to die surrounded by friends — a difficult task in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen. That being said, Yuji fully intends to keep his promise to Wasuke.

This is seen when Nagi immediately invites Yuji into their home upon realizing he was friends with Junpei. She hopes that her son would finally come out of his shell after befriending someone as outgoing as Yuji.
Unfortunately, Nagi dies as a result of a curse attack. Unbeknownst to Junpei, Mahito planted one of Sukuna's fingers in his home, drawing the attention of a powerful curse that killed her after discovering the finger. Before meeting Gojo and Geto, Rika had resigned herself to her fate and seemed to take pride in the fact she was going to fuse with Tengen.
However, the Star Plasma Vessel's final days with Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto convince her she still wants to continue living. Unfortunately, her wish can't be realized. A hefty bounty is placed on Riko's head by the Time Vessel Association, and Toji Fushiguro intends to collect it. After Riko Amanai's death, Gojo confronts Toji once more. This time, the World's Strongest Sorcerer proves why he is feared throughout Jujutsu society. His use of the Hollow Purple Technique proves too powerful for Toji to deal with, and in one attack, Gojo kills one of the most dangerous characters in the entire series. 10 Jujutsu Kaisen Storylines That Deserved Way More Attention
Though JJK is an excellently written anime, some of its most critical and interesting plotlines are a bit rushed.
While Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto are both in their second year at Tokyo Jujutsu High, Haibara Yu is a first-year student learning how to fight cursed spirits. Unlike most sorcerers, Haibara is an energetic and cheerful young man who approaches jujutsu sorcery with an overarching sense of optimism. Although viewers never get to see him in action, it can be assumed that Haibara had already reached Grade 2 before this death.
Ultimately, Haibara dies on a routine mission that he accepts with his classmate, Kento Nanami. Their superiors underestimate the strength of the curse they are tasked with exorcising, and although Nanami survives, Haibara is an unfortunate casualty of their carelessness. His death is one of the most influential factors in pushing Suguru Geto and Kento Nanami to abandon jujutsu society.

Unsurprisingly, they promptly betray him after healing his body. Expecting this, Mechamaru puts up a valiant effort against the evil villains, but Mahito ultimately proves too strong and crafty for Mechamaru to defeat. When Geto discovered this, he slaughtered their entire village and adopted the girls as his own.
